As of November 1, 2024 until November 11, 2024 internet social networks in Mauritius have been suspended.
In this pre-election period the outgoing government has taken it upon themselves to order the suspension, by ISPs (internet providers), of the Mauritius social networks such as Facebook, YouTube. The reasoning for this is the concerns for illegal postings that threaten national security.
I firmly abhor this undemocratic action which brings the country’s status into disrepute as in a dictatorship. It does not help in this period of pre-elections and impedes the electorate of impartial information.
I am lost for words!!!!! This may however be the the proverbial nail in the coffin for the current regime!!!! It gives them the advantage over the opposition as they will still be able to carry on with their campaign using the MBC!
The population however will not accept this and will surely voice their grievances at the ballot box! I hope there will be a free and fair election and we will see what the people think of this very unpopular move!
