The UK newspaper, Daily Mail and the Mail Online website, has published an article about the fate of stray dogs. This article is quite sensational in its description of how the problematic stray dog campaign is being dealt with in Mauritius. The article mentions that the control unit is catching any dog for the pound which is not on a leash, regardless if the dog has a collar or not. In some instances even if the owner is present. Nobody on the island can deny that there is a genuine stray dog problem. For the sake of the island’s tourism, action had to be taken for health, hygiene and safety reasons. However, is this the right way to deal with it? Perhaps it is time for new legislation and regulations on dog ownership. Click this link to read the Mail Online undercover report.
