National Day

canstockphoto23400404Celebrating Independence Day on Thursday, 12 March 2015. This year marks the 47th year of the country’s independence. The distinguished guest of honour for the official celebrations is the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

The operative word of these celebrations is the nation’s access to “independence” back in 1968. Huge advancements have been made in the country. As someone who has continuously visited Mauritius for more than 30 years, I can attest to the growing development of the country. The country is recognised as one of the most modern countries in the Indian Ocean and African region. Huge leaps have been made to bring the country to international economic and technological standards.

However, we can also recognise that the country has received help from friendly countries such as India, China, U.S.A. and from the European Union. With all these partnerships and assistance programs it could be argued that Mauritius is not yet fully independent. The nation has benefited from grants and interest-free loans which have helped to bring Mauritius to a level that is envied by many countries in the region.

Mauritius has recently held elections and a new government installed. During the new team’s office they will be implementing a program of changes that will further enhance the country’s advancement in many areas. Nevertheless, the new government has inherited vast scandals and mismanagement from the previous one. This adds to their burden because they need to deal with cleaning-up matters of good governance and justice.

However, this small island nation is proud of the achievements and its democratic model in the region. In this respect Mauritius seeks to be a prosperous regional commercial hub. By all accounts international experts show that Mauritius can meet this and already some African nations are studying the Mauritian model.

MauritiusThe Mauritius motto on the coat of arms is “Stella Clavisque Maris Indici” which is translated as “Star and Key of the Indian Ocean”, a very fitting term for a young small island nation which shines against all odds. Happy birthday Mauritius.

    1. There will be a parade in the capital Port Louis around 1800hrs. SMF (Special Mobile Force), Coast Guard, Police making up a guard of honour for the raising of the flag ceremony in the very place where independence was obtained from the British back in 68. After which there is a cultural show.
